DeckPro™ Composite Screws

Choose size & pack

First-Time Right. Zero Callbacks.

The DeckPro™ Composite Exterior Trim Head screw is a purpose-built fastener optimized for securing composite and cellular PVC trim and fascia. Featuring precision reverse threads under the head, it traps displaced substrate material during drive-in, effectively preventing mushrooming and dimpling to guarantee a smooth, uniform surface.

Trim Head: Clean, finished look

Underhead Reverse Thread: Reduces or eliminates mushrooming

These deck screws work every bit as good, and look just like, deck screws costing a lot more. There's nothing fancy about the packaging (they come in a plastic container with a torx head driver) but they get the job done. And they match the color of my decking perfectly. For installation on a composite deck it's a good idea to start a pilot hole using a small drill bit. It's possible to drive these into the decking without a pilot hole but it's more work. I would definitely purchase these again!

These work great. No torx strip issues. Pretty much flawless in my opinion.

They blend in just as good as the big box store screws and perform identically. Saved my job and saved me money. I would have never used them if the store kept their shelves stocked but now I’ll buy these exclusively moving forward.

Works as advertised and excellent quality screws

Installed our pool deck using these last fall. We've gone through heavy snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and summer heatwaves, and not a single screw has backed out, popped up, or shown any signs of rust bleed. The coating quality is definitely there. Very reliable.

The screws work great in the composite decking itself, but I had two snap off right at the shank when driving them into an older, very dense pressure-treated joist without pre-drilling. Once I started drilling pilot holes through the joists, they performed fine. Just be careful if your substructure is super hard lumber.

Used these for a backyard deck and stair project using capped composite boards. The painted head blends in nicely with the board color so the fasteners almost disappear.

FAQs

What are composite screws, and how are they different from standard wood screws?+
Composite screws are specifically engineered for fastening composite decking, PVC, and capped polymer boards. Unlike standard wood screws, they feature under-head cutting/milling ribs and a specialized thread design near the head. This allows the screw to cleanly countersink into dense composite materials without creating a "mushroom" effect (where the screw head forces material upward, leaving an unsightly raised bump around the hole). They also typically feature corrosion-resistant coatings (such as ACQ-compatible epoxy or Grade 305/316 stainless steel) to withstand harsh outdoor weathering.
Do I need to pre-drill holes before installing composite screws?+
In most cases, pre-drilling is not required when using high-quality composite screws featuring a self-drilling or type-17 cutting point. However, pre-drilling is strongly recommended in specific scenarios: Near the very ends or edges of composite boards to prevent splitting. When working with dense capped composite or PVC boards in cold weather, as lower temperatures make materials more brittle. If you are using solid-core composite boards or driving into dense hardwood joists (e.g., pressure-treated lumber or pressure-treated framing in colder climates).
How do I prevent the "mushrooming" effect when driving composite screws?+
"Mushrooming" occurs when the screw head pushes excess composite material up above the surface of the board. To prevent this, ensure you use screws with reverse threads or cutting fins under the head, which clear away and countersink the displaced material smoothly. Additionally, use a drill/driver equipped with an adjustable depth-setting nose piece or clutch to stop the screw precisely flush with the board surface. Avoid over-driving the screw, as sinking it too deep compromises the protective cap of the composite board.
What length of composite screw should I use for standard decking boards?+
As a general rule, the screw needs to penetrate at least 1-1/2 inches (approx. 38mm) into the framing joist for maximum holding power. For standard 5/4-inch (approx. 25mm thick) composite decking boards, a 2-1/2 inch screw is the industry standard. If you are installing thicker fascia boards, stair treads, or multi-layer setups, scale up your screw length accordingly while ensuring the shank diameter matches your structural load requirements.
Are composite screws compatible with ACQ pressure-treated lumber joists?+
Yes. Modern pressure-treated lumber uses chemicals like Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), which are highly corrosive to standard plain steel or zinc-plated fasteners. All exterior-grade composite screws should feature ACQ-compatible coatings (such as multi-layer ceramic/epoxy finishes) or be made of marine-grade Stainless Steel (Grade 305 or 316). Always verify that the fasteners you choose carry a corrosion-resistance rating suitable for treated lumber to prevent premature rust stains and structural failure.
