Plan your exterior fasteners before the first board goes down

A fastener order starts with the job, not the box. Before choosing screws for a deck, fence or exterior assembly, record what the screw will connect and where that connection will live. A short project brief makes product comparisons and pricing conversations much more useful.

1. Describe the exposure

Write down whether the connection is sheltered, exposed to rain or close to a pool or coastline. Include any conditions that may need a separate review. Ask for the coating or material specification for that environment rather than relying on a product photograph or the colour of a screw.

2. Identify both sides of the connection

List the surface material and the support separately: wood decking to wood joists, composite boards to a substructure, or a timber member at a structural connection. Include the decking brand, treatment information and any metal components that contact the fastener. Share the relevant material manufacturer's fastening instructions with the supplier.

3. Separate appearance from the fastening specification

A visible face fastening and a concealed clip system produce different finishes and have different installation requirements. Decide which appearance the project needs, then check the exact board and system compatibility. A hidden fastening layout also needs a plan for edges, starter boards and finishing details.

4. Confirm the exact product before counting packs

Record the product reference, diameter, length, head, drive and finish on the same line as the application. For a specified or load-bearing connection, use the product and installation schedule accepted for that connection. A similar-looking screw is not enough information to approve a substitution.

Send one clear brief: application, materials, exposure, product specification and estimated quantity.

Turn the brief into a purchase list

Group quantities by application and installation stage. Note any spare allowance separately so that the crew can distinguish the planned quantity from contingency stock. Confirm pack quantities and availability before placing the final order.
